MOH**This week's lesson does menton a graphically violent event that the Samurai did to themselves. Please use your parental discretion in this chapter! Both 4 &5th grade covered the Samurai and Shoguns in class. We glued all kinds of activities in their history notebooks! I showed them (and edited a part out) a deconstructed history youtube about the Samurai . You can look it up or email me if you want the link. We also talked about theme for their book presentations due next week! We brainstormed topics & themes regarding Finding Nemo first. At home: 1. Finish The Door in the Wall. 2. Prepare a theme book presentation. 3. Get caught up on timeline cards. I LOVE this passage from the book. I read it multiple times and each time I almost cried. IEW (writing)4th Grade: In class we peer edited their Lesson 14 3 pictures. I know it seems like this has been stretched out, but I really want them to be confident in this Unit 5 process. At home: 1. Please have your child check their editing notes from peers. 2. Make any changes. Judy Blume says, "I am not a good writer. I am a good re-writer." 3. Keep reading The Door in The Wall! Such a wonderful read a lout. There is so much to discuss and unpack. I highly recommend it as a read aloud. History (2-5th)Thank you for your patience and flexibility in the modified schedule today. Mrs. Taylor had 2 sick kiddos and we had to adapt our schedules last minute. Each of the block classes were combined for history book presentations. This ended up being a great cooperative learning experience for all grades! 2nd Grade Presentations:3rd Grade:At home: Please follow the syllabus & read lessons 55-57 Begin reading A Door In The Wall For 4th-5th graders, I"m attaching a youtube video to watch about The Battle of Hastings. Parents of 2&3rd grade can preview it first! Have a great week! IEW4th Grade: This week the 4th graders are working a 3 paragraph report on Florence Nightingale! In class we: 1. Read a long story about Florence Nightingale. 2. Reviewed the process of choosing key topics. 3. Filled in a 3 part foldable with KWO included! EVERYONE Is writing from this same model. Same topics. Same or very similar KWO. This is a huge skill and I really want to model the process and emphasize the organizational side. At home: 1. Re read the source text (the lesson 10 handout on Florence Nightingale) 2. Review your KWO (it's on a foldable worksheet) 3. Write your 3 paragrahs & have a parent edit! 4. Re-write or type.... Bring back final copy next week! 5th Grade: We started on a new unit...Unit 5- Writing from Pictures In Class: 1. We brainstormed Central Facts for each picture. Remember Central Fact = Topic Sentence. 2. Then we discussed past tense and past perfect tense. Writing what you see in the picture is the Central Fact and anything that happened before that is considered past perfect tense. ***Super tricky At home: 1. Please read through all of lesson 13 carefully! 2. Remember this is considered "Event Description." 3. Finish KWO on page 105 & write 3 paragraphs- ask those questions!!! 4. Bring a final copy back next Tuesday! HistoryBook Reports on any Viking themed book are due next Tuesday! The assigned project is retelling the PLOT, including main charaters, events leading up to the climax, and the resolution. I'm attaching a plot diagram for you to use as a guide to retell using a knotted rope, make painted rocks, make a set of finger puppets etc. OR you can use this chart to and fill it in according to the book you read. Please do not share every detail, but just the key points. The attachment is a great skeleton to use. In class we: 1. Watched 2 videos about vikings and their explorations. One seems intense because of the music and lighting, but it is pretty kid friendly. 2. They have a few pieces of a lapbook glued in and a large viking exploration route map. 4th graders need to label and finish the lapbook pieces. At home: 1. Finish book report 2. History In class we focused on good King Wenceslas and his life. There is a 25 min video on youtube that both classes watched and were pretty attentive. We talked about how he was generous and kind towards all people. Then, we made little peppermint candy gifts for the kids to hand out to someone! We have a very sweet group of kids! At home: 1. Read lessons 45-50 & timeline cards 2. Enjoy diving deeper into Vikings/Medieval things (this is a great time to do some of the pins you found on Pinterest) 3. It was such a wonderful day in 4th & 5th grade! Sometimes I wish you all could see from a double sided window the amount of participation, listening, and activity that happens in our class on Tuesdays. It is so much fun! Students also have a 2 page handout for their upcoming book report presentation on their King Arthur/Knights of the Round Table book. Please check their backpacks! IEW5th Grade: Today we moved from Unit 3 to Unit 4 (Summarizing a Reference "Some-a-rizing") Please read through the Unit 4 tab & information in the binder. In class: 1. Listened to some well-written lesson 8 borrowing conflicts papers! Impressive! 2. We started lesson 9 At home: 1. Please read through the lesson 9 and the reference binder unit 4. 2. Finish the KWO- remember to choose some and forget the rest. Only make key words from interesting/important facts according to your topic sentence! 3. Write/edit/re write & bring a final, polished copy on Tuesday. ![]() Ask your student if they remember my funnel drawing and what it's purpose is for Unit 4! The topic sentence should just be a topic + a detail/fact. If your topic sentence is too narrow then only a few details will fit into your funnel. If it's too wide, then you'll be writing everything all over again. Not the point! The goal is to report on a few key details/interesting facts pertaining to your topic sentence. 4th Grade- In class we: 1. Listened to some well written reports about foxes! 2. I handed out 2 grammar worksheets for practice/ extra credit. I told the kids if they were completed at home & returned, then they would receive a small candy prize. 3. Started lesson 6 "Bach" At home: Please read my chart/picture below. It is very self explanatory. Please note that the Harriet Tubman paragraph is OPTIONAL.
