In class we: 1. Listened to reports on their wax museum person. 2. Practiced their wax museum speeches. 3. Decorated folders for our writing portfolios. We also had a chance to hear some rought draft speeches! Students have a brainstorming page and a template for a medieval poem. I'd LOVE to have them back next week for their portfolios. At home: 1. Final edit & type the 3 paragraph report from their wax museum. Return next week! 2. Finish medieval poem! History 4th/5thBoth classes worked on the final pieces of their renaissance lap books. I have promised a smoothie treat (homemade in class) to students have the two sets of handouts finished in their lapbooks next week! At home: Wax Museum-palooza! Please finish the following items: 1. Memorize speech and practice, practice, practice! 2. Gather items for your costume! 3. Decorate your board! In class we: 1. Discussed the wax museum project in more detail. 2. Watched a video about Galileo and talked about other Renaissance Scientists. 3. Build marshmallow constellations. 4. Practiced our geography skills with world map puzzles! At home: 1. Please fill out the Apple and the Arrow worksheet & return next week. It's very short and sweet. 2. I'm also going to attach a sample Wax Museum speech! See if you can find each of the "pieces" of the speech that are mentioned in the outline. Wax Museum Sample Speech: My middle name is Roosevelt, but it’s not because of FDR. I was born in Georgia and moved to California as a baby. Sports were a huge part of my life. My brother won the silver medal in the 200 meter dash in the 1936 Olympics. I am Jackie Robinson and I am most known for breaking the color line in baseball. One thing you may not know about me is I fought in World War 2 as a morale officer. I am an alumni of the UCLA Bruins and I hope you remember me for my bravery and courage to not let racial discrimination hold me back! Writing 4th/5thBoth classes had about 15 min. of WORK TIME. It was really great.

In class we: Listened to everyone's papers from Unit 8. Well done 4th graders! Then we worked on our introductions. At home: Please have them finish writing/editing/ and rewriting this one introduction paragraph during the two weeks. Bring this back along with the other 4 paragraphs to make an complete 5 paragraph essay. Book Reports!*Book report information went home today! Please choose any project that includes all the elements of a story (setting, characters, plot, theme). There are a plethora of options. I'm attaching some templates for the cereal box, pizza box, and hanger mobile below. These reports do not need to be complicated! Please use these as a guideline or reference. History (MOH)We had a great combined 4/5th grade class today for history! We touched on the Black Death, Cantebury Tales, and Joan of Arc! We crammed a lot of little details into a short amount of time. I'm attaching a youtube video about Joan of Arc, an interactive DK website about the Black Death, and a picture of the book for Cantebury Tales. At home: 1. In class we: 1. Shared our two topics for our reports 2. Brainstormed our third topic 3. Peer edited if done with brainstorming At home: 1. KWO the 3rd paragraph (remember topic=paragraph) 2. Write & edit the 3rd paragraph 3. Write a conclusion to the three topic paragraphs. *A conclusion restates the previous topics & their significance. 4. Bring back the 3rd paragraph & conclusion next week. 5th Grade: In class we: 1. Listened to topic sentences/clinchers from Lesson 20. 2. Read through Lesson 21 about adding the conclusion & introduction. At home: 1. Finish lesson 21 (Power of Words part 2) 2. Bring back the 4 paragraph paper next week. Writing (IEW)4th Grade: In class we: 1. Heard some crazy & fun unit 5 stories. 2. Moved on to lesson 22 Unit 8-basic essay model. 3. Brainstromed possible subject ideas with 3 topics(topics=paragraphs). Please refer to their Reference Binder behind Unit 8 for more information. At home: 1. Choose 1 subject 2. Choose 3 topics about subject *technically this should have been done in class 3. KWO 2 topics and write on those 2 topics. 4. Return final polished copies of 2 paragraphs/topics. ***We will build on this over the next two weeks! 5th Grade: In class we: 1. Didn't have time to listen to reports on Communism in China (sorry!). 2. Started lesson 21! *It's a GREAT lesson. 3. Read through lesson 21*Please read over carefully. At home: 1. Choose 2 examples of how words are powerful & influential (use one historical and one personal) 2. Read through the lesson for a really good example. 3. Remember this is writing in respnse to the prompt about Hitler & Churchill & World War 1. 4. Return next week with 2 paragraphs in FPC format. *We will add introduction/conclusion next week. History (MOH)Our hiBoth 4/5th graders focused on William Wallace &Bruce as they fought for Scotland's freedom from England. Bruce has a great quote about perseverance that was inspired by a spider! Our history text really picks up on more exciting times, so please refer back to the text to find more ideas/activities. We would love to do them all if we had the time.
In class we: 1. Painted our own version of tartans. 2. Colored Scotland's flag 3. Talked briefly about Dante & assigned a poetry memorization challenge! At home: 1. Finish reading any Robin Hood/Marco Polo book. 2. IEW4th Grade In class we: 1. Listened to some wonderful 3 picture event writing! 2. We edited a paragraph together & reviewed the rules of quotation marks! 3. Looked at 4 sets of new 3 pictures! Kids brainstromed story lines and chose 1. At home: 1. Please KWO only 1 (3) picture story. 2 Edit & write & return with a FPC of your new story next Tuesday! 5th Grade ****The sylabus is wrong! We are working on lesson 19 this week. I'll update it. In class we: 1. Listened to Lesson #18 fused outline paragraphs. 2. Read 2 source texts from lesson 19 & kWO from 1 and started the 2nd. At home: 1. Finish KWO for source 2 2. Fused the 2 outlines 3. Write 1 paragraph/edit/rewrite MOHWe had a great time learning about Marco Polo & The Silk Road! In class we: 1. Learned more about the trading commodities along The Silk Road, China, and spices! 2. Kids even blindly sniffed spices to see if they could name them. 3. We talked about what it would be like to be Marco Polo & discover a whole new culture, food, language, and try to explain it to people who wouldn't believe you! At home: 1.. Finish pieces of the lapbook that are glued in their books (sorry 5th grade- you have to cut and assemble yours). 2. Read & complete timeline cards for lessons 70-73 3. Keep reading about Robin Hood or maybe a Marco Polo book! IEW4th Grade In class we: 1. Listened to only the 1st paragraph of each 3 picture story. 2. Assigned a new set of 3 pictures (already in binders) 3. Discussed homework. At home: 1. Please fill out the 3 picture KWO for a NEW set of 3 pictures 2. Write a rough draft. 3. Choose ONE rough draft to edit, rewrite, and prepare a final polished copy to return next week! 5th Grade In class we: 1. Started lesson 18 Unit 6 2 KWO both source texts 3. Gave topic sentence ideas to help w/fused outline (please finish) 4. Brainstormed topic sentences for paragraph At home: 1. Finish all of lesson 18- finish fused KWO & brainstorming pages 2. Write a rough draft from your fused outline, edit, and rewrite. Bring back a FPC on Tuesday! History"He used his mind to appreciate God rather than question Him. He once wrote, "I wish to show that there is one wisdom which is perfect, and that this is contained in the Scriptures." MOH pg. 400In class we: Learned about Roger Bacon while eating BACON! Learned how he was a scientist who loved God's word & the wisdom found in the Scriptures. We experimented with some of his scientific discoveries: LIGHT- reflection & refraction! There are a couple of pages glued in their notebooks to finish & talk about. It's a really fascinating lesson. At home:
